Our area

Grantham is a picturesque market town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire. It is situated on the East Coast main line between London and Edinburgh offering regular trains to London Kings Cross in just over an hour. With excellent access to the A1 north and south, Grantham is located approximately 26 miles south of the city of Lincoln, and approximately 24 miles east of Nottingham.

Grantham is surrounded by fantastic countryside and beautiful villages including the highly coveted Vale of Belvoir area. The Vale of Belvoir offers fantastic views of the 10th century Belvoir Castle and is home to the award-winning pub The Chequers.

History & Education

The town is well known as the birthplace of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who attended the grammar school Kesteven and Grantham Girls School and also the birthplace of Isaac Newton who is a bloodline ancestor of our Chief Executive Mark Newton and who attended the local boys grammar school, The Kings School where his alleged signature can still be seen upon a library window sill.

Both schools achieve high examination results and are highly placed in the county’s league tables with the other notable school in the area of this type being the Central Technology and Sports College. The area has a wealth of good primary schools including Barrowby School, The National School and Grantham Preparatory School, an independent school preparing entrants for the 11-plus examination.

The town is close to an ancient Roman road and was the scene of Oliver Cromwell’s first advantage over Royalists during the English Civil War at Gonerby Moor. The Grantham Parade and the Grantham Festival take place every year and until the 1960s there was an annual pig drive through the centre of the town.

The town is also known for making the first gingerbread biscuits – created in 1740 by William Eggleston, a baker in the town.

Lifestyle

Hotels and hospitality are well represented in the Grantham area. For leisure and business travellers there’s the Olde Barn Hotel in Marston, the De Vere Belton Woods Hotel with its leisure complex and golf course, the Ramada hotel and various other golf clubs. Nearby Stoke Rochford Hall won the Les Routiers Wedding Venue of the Year in 2011 and the Angel and Royal on Grantham’s High Street is widely regarded as the oldest surviving English Inn.

The food-processing industry is Grantham’s largest employer, but many people in the town travel to work in the nearby cities.

The town is favoured by parents seeking places for their children at the selective grammar schools – the Kings School and Kesteven Girls School – alongside other well regarded nonselective secondary schools. The town also has direct transport connections for pupils attending private schools such as Nottingham High School and Lincoln Minster. For primary pupils, there is a wide range of schools and also a private school at Grantham Prep. Grantham College offers further education options.

Belvoir Castle- set in the heart of the countryside, Belvoir castle compromises acres of beautiful grounds and gardens. More recently they have developed and opened a unique retail village for food, drink, and shopping. It is the perfect family day out or destination for an evening with friends. They are also well known for hosting popular events such as the Belvoir Firework Display and Tough Mudder.

Harlaxton Manor- set back, down a beautiful driveway is the perfect stately home and its beautiful 6.5 acres of gardens. The venue hosts various events from grand weddings to conference meetings. If you fancy a sneak peek at the luxury that awaits, you can book a house and garden tour.

Stoke Rochford Hall- another beautiful mansion surrounded by acres of countryside. If you fancy splashing out and treating yourself, this could be the perfect getaway. It’s also another popular pick for short breaks, weddings, and conference events.

Belton House- If you love the outdoors and exploring, Belton House offers the perfect day out for the whole family. From adventure playgrounds, soft play and discovery centres to endless fields to walk, there is no end of fun waiting for a jam-packed day out.

Belmont Tower- located in the grounds of Belton House, the listed building is home to brown long-eared bats and pipistrelle bats. You will need to take a short walk from the car park to get there.
