Rising Number Of Families In The Private Rented Sector

  • Nearly one quarter of new tenancies agreed in the last year were for rentals where tenants included children in the household.
  • Of these, half were for families that included one child, while 37% of tenancies involving children were for families with two children. These figures remain remarkably consistent across all regions of England and Wales.
  • Among UK regions, households comprising three or more children account for between 12% (Yorkshire and the Humber) and 16% (West Midlands) of tenancies.
  • There are over 500,000 more households with dependent children living in the private sector today than in 2010/11. In 2017/18 1.6 million households in the private rented sector included dependent children, up 37% from 1.1 million in 2010/11.
