Coffee Culture

  • Tuesday 1st October marks International Coffee Day. Across the UK, 95 million cups of the world’s most popular drink (except for water) are consumed daily, whether at home or in one of over 25,000 coffee outlets across the country.
  • From instant to ground, lattes, to cappuccinos, flat whites to expressos, £10.1 billion was spent in coffee outlets across the UK in 2018, the equivalent of 43,402 average-priced UK homes.
  • Consumption of coffee in the UK varies by age, with those aged 53 years plus boasting the highest levels of consumption at 2.2 cups per day. Although under 20-year-olds currently drink on average just 0.5 cups, the fastest growing demographic for coffee consumption is those aged 13–18 years.
  • The number of coffee outlets is anticipated to overtake the number of pubs in the UK by 2030. Up and coming key coffee trends include superfood coffee, cold brew and nitro coffee and wifi-enabled coffee makers.
