The town of Swadlincote
Swadlincote, once the industrial heart of South Derbyshire, is a dynamic town enjoying a period of sustained and effective development and growth through continued long term investment.
Situated in the gentle, rolling South Derbyshire countryside and the centre of the recently established National Forest, the town and surrounding area is more an amalgamation of historical settlements, including Church Gresley and Castle Gresley which date back to the Domesday Book, along with Newhall and Woodville. Throughout the 1800’s and the discovery of high quality mineral deposits and coal, the town grew to become an important centre for pottery, and in particular, pipeworks. Following the decline of these industries, the area has benefited from significant and ongoing investment in it’s infrastructure, housing and leisure facilities.
Geographically, Swadlincote is the centre of England and the furthest town from the coast. This makes it an ideal base for many national business’s, with the M42, M1, M4, M5 and M6 all within easy reach, as are East Midlands Airport – the biggest air freight terminal in the UK after Heathrow - and Birmingham International Airport. The town is also within easy reach of Derby , Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester, making it an ideal and affordable commuter base.
The town centre has recently undergone an impressive upgrade, including the Delph market square and pedestrian High Street along with the creation of a town centre retail park including High Street shops, an Odeon cinema and family pub/restaurant. There is also a market on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays which extends along the High Street. Future developments that have been approved and are under construction include a Golf course and Hotel close to the town centre.
The area is served by a good number of well established primary schools, feeding three Comprehensive Schools.
