Coalville lies in North West Leicestershire and is a former coal mining town, as its name suggests. Coal was first mined in the area in medieval times, although there was little more than a single track until the early nineteenth century. The coal mining industry was at its height during the 1800s, with railway lines built to transport the coal from the mines. The mines closed during the 1980s and many local collieries have since been re-developed, with museums, shopping and business parks standing in their place.
Within close proximity to Coalville are many attractive towns and villages, including Whitwick, Ravenstone, Thornton, Bagworth, Heather, Hugglescote, Newton Burgoland. To the east, lies Charnwood Forest.
Sales administrator Julie Bywater remembers her grandfather talking about servicing the Coalville clock tower. He worked for Lashmore's jewellers on High Street and the unattached young men and women of the town would promenade between this landmark and another local clocktower, making ‘eyes’ at each other and earning the walkway the nickname ‘The Monkey Walk’, which is now the name of a pub in the town.
There is a wide choice of shops in the area from High Street brands to family run businesses and places to eat range from traditional pubs to oriental takeaways and fast foods.
There is also plenty on offer when it comes to sports clubs, facilities and gyms and there are tennis courts in Coalville Park.
For education, there are 10 primary schools, 3 secondary schools - one with a sixth form. The town is also home to FE/HE Stephenson College, which offers around 800 different courses in academic, vocational and industry-specific subjects. King Edward VII Science and Sports College which caters for 14-18 year olds, provides GCSE's, A-Levels and a number of vocational courses.
With its combination of beautiful countryside and easy commuting, the town attracts a wide range of buyers.
Coalville lies on the A511 trunk road between Leicester and Burton upon Trent, close to junction 22 of the M1 motorway, where the A511 meets the A50 between Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Leicester. The town also offers easy access to both East Midlands and Birmingham airports.
Buses run to Leicester, Loughborough, Burton-on-Trent, Hinckley and East Midlands airport. The nearest rail station is Loughborough, eight miles north-east of Coalville.
